Virology Core (Wes Sundquist, Director; Uta von Schwedler, Manager)
|
Our Virology Core facility provides access to state of the art techniques for research in molecular virology, and thereby expands the capabilities of other Center members by providing them with access to HIV replication assays, siRNA technology, assays for testing the efficiency and sites of action of potential new inhibitors, etc. Molecular virology is performed in two different tissue culture laboratories located in rooms 3120B and E in the EEJ MRB building at the University of Utah. 3120B is a 500 sq. ft. certified BSL-3 laboratory that is used exclusively for growth and research on HIV-1. Safety features include a key access external lock, a negative air pressure system with a continuously monitored alarm, an internal autoclave system, and airlock antechamber room used for lab storage and for gowning, external liquid nitrogen and CO2 systems, and laboratory-wide UV sterilization lights working every night on an autotimer. All experiments in this laboratory are performed under BSL-3 safety conditions, and only fully trained personnel are allowed in this laboratory.
